Efficient Processes and Use of Space in the Electrophysiology Laboratory

Challenge

The Imelda Hospital in Bonheiden planned to build a state-of-the-art electrophysiology laboratory to further improve patient care. A key requirement was to make the complex flow of visual information more efficient and space-saving. Previous systems required numerous monitors, which took up a lot of space and required a great deal of organisational effort. The aim was to find a flexible and user-friendly solution for the operating theatre and control area.

Solution

Working closely with GE Healthcare, EIZO developed a customised cockpit solution for the new EP laboratory. This included a 58-inch 4K monitor in the operating theatre, several high-resolution RadiForce monitors in the control room and two Large Monitor Managers in the server area. All video sources are centrally bundled, distributed and controlled – for maximum clarity and minimum space requirements. This allows the surgical team to efficiently retrieve and display all relevant information.

Result

The new EP laboratory has been in operation since the end of 2021 and is considered the hospital’s technological flagship. EIZO’s visual solution enables smooth workflows, greater flexibility and a high level of user comfort. Both medical staff and patients benefit from an optimised environment. The consistently positive feedback confirms the success of the integrated overall solution.

Overcoming Complexity and Lack of Space in the EP Laboratory

The Imelda Hospital in Bonheiden is a renowned institution with a focus on cardiology, among other things. As part of the expansion and modernisation of the technical infrastructure, a new electrophysiology laboratory was to be built that would meet the highest standards. One of the biggest challenges was managing the large amount of visual information that had previously been displayed on eight or more individual monitors. This confusing and space-intensive setup made it difficult to work efficiently and placed high demands on the coordination of the medical teams. The hospital was looking for a centralised, powerful and space-saving solution that was intuitive to use and made all relevant data accessible in real time.

Central Visualisation with Maximum Overview

To meet the specific requirements of the EP laboratory, EIZO worked with GE Healthcare to develop a comprehensive visual solution. At the heart of the system is the 58-inch 4K LS580W monitor in the operating theatre, which allows all important image sources to be displayed simultaneously. This system is complemented by three RadiForce RX660-LM monitors in the control room, which, with their 6-megapixel resolution, combine multiple information sources in excellent image quality on a single screen. Signal processing is handled by two Large Monitor Managers (LMM0802), which bundle all video sources in the server room and distribute them specifically to the operating theatre and control room. The entire solution has been precisely tailored to the work processes in the clinical environment and ensures a highly networked and flexible setup.

More Efficiency, Comfort and Clarity

The new system architecture offers clear advantages for everyone involved: the bundled, high-resolution display of relevant information saves time and reduces the likelihood of errors in the operating theatre. At the same time, the space required in the control room is significantly reduced, as fewer monitors are needed – a major advantage in modern hospital buildings with limited space resources. The intuitive user interface also makes it easier to train new employees and improves team communication. Overall, doctors and technical staff benefit from an ergonomically optimised workplace with noticeably greater comfort and better control.
