Challenges and Requirements for Video Technology in the OR
The Siegen District Hospital operates five centralised operating theatres and performs around 7,500 procedures annually. The image and video technology used until then was outdated and no longer met the growing requirements for integration, resolution and ease of use. What was needed was a modern video management solution that could be fully integrated into the existing hospital IT system while offering high image quality and a user-friendly interface.
The tender focused on several requirements: Each operating theatre was to be equipped with a uniform, high-resolution solution – including 4K monitors, secure video and data routing, and direct connection to HIS, PACS and MIS. In addition, complete surgical documentation and a hygienically optimised, wall-mounted workstation with touch panel were required. It was crucial that all imaging systems (e.g. C-arms) could be flexibly integrated and that the system could be expanded in a future-proof manner.
Integrated 4K Video Management Solution with AVoIP and Central Control
EIZO developed an integrated complete solution based on the Alipe AVoIP system and the CuratOR product line. Image data is transmitted via fibre optic video cabling, which ensures high bandwidth, flexibility and reliability. Each surgical scenario can be individually mapped by adding new video sources or displays with minimal effort.
Control is centralised via the EIZO Surgical Panel SP1-24T – a hygienically sealed 24″ touch display that is operated via the Caliop software user interface. Here, patient data can be loaded from the HIS, video sources routed, surgeries documented and images stored or transmitted to other systems. Two 32″ CuratOR EX3241 monitors provide high-quality 4K display of all relevant content, including PACS images. The solution was fully tailored to the technical conditions of the hospital and has a modular design.
Increased Efficiency and User Satisfaction Thanks to Modern Video Management Solution
The new video management solution has significantly simplified processes in the operating theatre. The uniform integration of all imaging systems ensures that all devices use the same connection for documentation. This increases efficiency and minimises sources of error. The system automatically recognises connected media and displays content correctly without manual intervention. The intuitive user interface was very well received by employees – training costs and familiarisation time remained low.
The high image quality and simple, secure operation were particularly highlighted. According to operating theatre manager Kurt Stremmel, the system offers significantly more stable cable routing and intuitive control. Managing director Ingo Fölsing also praised the timely implementation and professional cooperation. The service provided by EIZO is described as reliable and uncomplicated, even beyond the project phase.
