Dornbirn City Hospital faced the challenge of modernizing its imaging systems as part of a new operating room construction. The existing technology was cumbersome to operate and did not provide optimal visibility for the OR staff. The goal was to find a solution that enables intuitive operation, delivers lossless image quality with minimal latency, and integrates seamlessly into the existing IT infrastructure.
Solution
In a tender process, EIZO’s CuratOR system impressed with its technical performance and high user-friendliness. In total, seven operating rooms across two construction phases were equipped with CuratOR Surgical Panels, the CuratOR Caliop software, and the CuratOR Alipe video-over-IP solution. The image and system integration was seamlessly implemented into the existing clinical IT structures, supported by comprehensive on-site support and staff training.

The city hospital now benefits from lossless, low-latency image transmission, intuitive control, and comprehensive system integration. Operating room workflows have been optimized without the need to alter existing processes. Challenges in OR Modernization: Greater Visibility, Intuitive Operation, and IT Integration
The previous OR towers with only a single monitor no longer met the requirements of modern surgical procedures. The operating concept was cumbersome and did not provide the necessary overview in critical situations. The goal of the modernization was to introduce a system that enables high-resolution imaging from multiple sources while remaining simple and quick to operate. Additionally, the new components had to integrate seamlessly into the existing hospital IT (PACS, HIS). Intuitive operation under stressful conditions, lossless data transmission, and data protection were central considerations. The hospital also sought a long-term service and support solution with clearly defined on-site contacts.
Innovative OR Hardware and Video-over-IP for Precise Image Integration
At the heart of the new solution is the CuratOR Surgical Panel SP1-24, which serves as the central control unit with a 24″ display. It is complemented by the SP2-46T-24, a flush-mounted 46″ panel with optional touch control for image display during procedures. The panels were seamlessly integrated into the glass walls of the operating rooms and allow simultaneous display of multiple image sources in high quality.
For overall system control, the CuratOR Caliop software is used. It provides an intuitive user interface, supports standard interfaces such as DICOM and HL7, and enables straightforward integration of individual hospital systems.
For lossless video transmission, the CuratOR Alipe video-over-IP system was implemented. It uses fiber-optic cables to transmit uncompressed Full-HD and 4K signals in real time with minimal latency. The entire solution was implemented in compliance with data protection regulations, featuring dedicated networks for each OR and encrypted data sharing.
Staff received comprehensive training prior to system deployment. During the rollout, an on-site team was available to quickly address any questions. Through an all-inclusive maintenance package, Dornbirn City Hospital continues to receive long-term support from EIZO and the local partner, Sanova Pharma.
Optimized Image Transmission for Smooth OR Workflows
The implementation of the new video systems significantly improved image quality while also speeding up and simplifying access to information in the OR. Thanks to the intuitive user interface, medical staff can fully focus on the procedure without being distracted by technical hurdles.
Automated export of image data to the archival system facilitates documentation and post-procedure review. Integration into existing systems was seamless, requiring no adjustments to established workflows. Particularly noteworthy is the high level of acceptance in daily clinical use—according to Technical Director Peter Palombo, the system has been very positively received by OR staff.
In addition, the video-over-IP technology with CuratOR Alipe ensures delay-free display of video data, supporting surgical precision and safety. Comprehensive service guarantees operational reliability and rapid response times for any technical issues.
