Optimized Surgical Documentation and Ergonomic Workplaces

Challenge

Before the construction of the new operating area, Landau Clinic faced a heterogeneous mix of systems for surgical documentation. Different technologies from various manufacturers led to high integration efforts, unclear workflows, and considerable follow-up costs for data management, licensing, and operation. In addition, direct access to intraoperative imaging data in the operating room was not possible.

Solution

As part of the construction of the new operating area, the clinic opted for an integrated system solution from EIZO. The four new operating rooms were equipped with surgical panels, video management software, and large-format monitors. The technology was space-savingly integrated into a wall only 20 cm deep and now enables central control of all image sources as well as structured surgical documentation.

Result

The new solution provides the surgical staff with an ergonomic workplace and immediate access to all relevant data and image sources. Usability has been simplified, workflows standardized, and at the same time operational follow-up costs have been reduced. Users praise the high functionality and the noticeable improvement in day-to-day surgical practice.

Decentralized Technology and Lack of Space in OR Documentation

Before the project, Landau Clinic was faced with a decentralized, technically inconsistent solution for surgical documentation. Each video system operated with its own technology, which was not only impractical in use but also led to consistently high costs for integration, licensing, and maintenance. Another central issue was the spatial limitation: only a wall depth of 20 cm was available for the new technology, in which all components had to be installed. The clinic’s internal requirements also included intuitive usability, full integration with the PACS system, and the ability to access and process all intraoperative imaging data directly in the operating room.

Innovative OR Technology: Parallel Workstations and Centralized Image Management Solution

To meet the requirements, an EIZO Surgical Panel SP2-46-24 was installed in each of the four new operating rooms. Each panel features two integrated monitors with separate computing units, allowing for parallel workstations. The 24″ monitor is used to control video management and documentation via the CuratOR Caliop vm, doc, and con software. The 46″ monitor displays X-ray images through connection to the clinic’s PACS system or, alternatively, shows all image sources from the operating room. Switching between sources is done via an easily accessible button. Eight decentralized connections in the operating room transmit all image signals to the Large Monitor Manager LMM0804. From there, the signals are distributed as needed to the main monitors or to the two additional EIZO EX271W satellite monitors at the OR table. This system-wide flexibility enables continuous, visually supported documentation and optimizes access to all relevant information.

Ergonomic Workstations and Efficient OR Workflows through a Central, Intuitive System Solution

With the new system solution, the staff at Landau Clinic benefit from clearly structured, ergonomic workstations. All necessary data and images are immediately available in the operating room, regardless of the specific workstation. The intuitive operation and central control reduce sources of error and facilitate medical work under time pressure. The entire surgical workflow has been made more efficient through standardization of the technology. Users particularly praise the high level of ergonomics and the functional design of the user interfaces. According to Thomas Hörner and Andrea Landgraf, routine operations are consistently positive, and the new solution is perfectly adapted to everyday clinical practice.
