Overcoming Complexity to Enable Seamless Clinical Workflows
The challenge was the integration of multiple advanced medical systems into a unified digital operating room environment, enabling centralized visualization, seamless interoperability, and optimized workflow management. The hospital aimed to enhance clinical coordination, provide real-time access to data, and support recording and live streaming for educational and medical purposes, while maintaining high standards of safety and uninterrupted daily operations. The project required careful design and customization to ensure compatibility across heterogeneous systems, minimal disruption to clinical workflows, and successful adoption by multidisciplinary teams.
A Tailored Digital OR Integration Unifying Visualization, Control, and Real-Time Communication
The solution comprised a customized integration of the EIZO CuratOR digital operating room platform, including EX3242‑3D surgical 4K monitors for high‑resolution 3D visualization and a SP2‑24T‑494K Surgical Panel with touch functionality for centralized control, patient data access, and PACS viewing. In addition, the full CuratOR Caliop software license was implemented to support video management, documentation, and PACS connectivity. The setup incorporated the SC430‑PTR surgical field camera system for live image capture, a video grabber for recording purposes, and a streaming system complemented by an integrated audio setup (microphone and speakers), enabling real‑time two‑way communication and the hospital’s participation in external conferences. All components were interconnected to ensure seamless signal routing, centralized control, and efficient workflow integration within the operating room environment.
Improved Visualization, Workflow, and Collaboration in a Unified Digital OR
The project resulted in a fully integrated and digitally optimized operating room environment, enabling centralized visualization, efficient workflow management, and seamless access to clinical data. Surgeons benefit from high‑resolution imaging and real‑time control of all visual sources directly within the sterile field, while the clinical team operates in a coordinated and ergonomic environment with reduced cognitive load.
The system also enabled the first live streaming of an open surgical procedure from a Greek public hospital, featuring real‑time two‑way communication and connecting the operating room with the Athens Concert Hall during the 23rd ENT Conference. This milestone supported interactive education, collaboration, and knowledge exchange beyond the hospital setting.
The clinical team adapted quickly to the new system, emphasizing its intuitive operation, reliability, and the significant added value it provides in daily clinical practice, training, and multidisciplinary communication.
Unlocking Clinical, Operational, and Educational Value in the Digital OR
The implementation of the Digital Operating Room delivered significant value across clinical, operational, and educational dimensions. Centralized visualization and integrated system control enhanced situational awareness and supported more efficient intraoperative decision‑making, while reducing the cognitive burden associated with managing multiple independent systems.
Seamless interoperability between medical devices and hospital information systems ensured immediate access to critical patient data and imaging, enabling more informed and timely clinical actions. At the same time, the integration of recording and live‑streaming capabilities transformed the operating room into a dynamic environment for education, training, and knowledge sharing, extending its impact beyond the physical boundaries of the hospital.
From an operational perspective, the solution optimized workflow efficiency through its user‑friendly and ergonomic design and supported improved coordination among multidisciplinary teams, while maintaining high standards of safety and reliability.
Do You Have a Special Requirement?
"Our goal was to create a Digital Operating Room for the hospital in which the surgeon would have immediate access to the patient’s medical examinations and be able both to record the procedure and to transmit it live, making online training possible. These capabilities contribute to ensuring the best possible conditions for the patient, while also supporting the more effective expansion of medical Knowledge."
